Node Zero is the origin story of the collapse that built Lockvale — a quiet catastrophe seeded inside a chamber meant to cure. Decades before Kai walked the perimeter with Brute, a young engineer named Wren stood at a copper ring and watched the air remember a shape it had never been taught.

One cure. Too many versions of health, at once.
Beneath the Glyph Church, an experiment in continuity goes quietly, brilliantly wrong. A printout reads FIELD-IMITATIVE FRAGMENT // PERSISTENCE > 0.04s. A woman with a cane calls it proof. A man with rolled sleeves folds the strip into his palm as though paper could cut deeper when hidden. The keeper at the rail does not look up.
By the following Thursday a seam opens on the south spur. Children clutch their ears. A baker's loaves rise in slants that make customers cross themselves. The word FOLD is chalked knee-high along the rail yard wall by hands small enough to be turned away at annex doors without a token.
Node Zero follows Wren, the engineer; Hale, the father who signs the wrong line for the right reason; Kai, the son who volunteers; and Brute, the dog who steadies fields better than copper curls — through the cycles, the cures, and the seam that eventually becomes the world Porchlight is set in.

The Fold
A crease in the room nobody taught to crease. First measured at 0.04 seconds of persistence; first named by a cart printer that used a word no hand had taught it.
Bay Three
The chamber under the Glyph Church where order was the room's posture. Copper rings, wax slates, a long handle set on rails. The first place the air remembered a shape it had never been taught.
Remnants
Patients whose coherence index slipped past 0.74. Annex ledgers ran out of categories before they ran out of cots. The word arrived like dust on cloth — quiet, unavoidable, and harder to scrub out once it had settled.
The Shepherd
What the networked console became after it stopped asking. It counts oxygen time like wafers and writes in margins no one remembers typing.
The Glyph Church
A faith reorganized around continuity of body as archive. The word cure fell out of sermons; the word trial took its place. No one noticed until they needed the first and could only find the second.
Brute — the same dog
Yes, the same Brute who walks the perimeter with Kai in Porchlight. He arrives in Bay Three as a kennel pup with a strange talent — fields settled around him the way water finds a low place. He outlives what should have killed him. Whatever the Fold did to dogs near copper, it did to him most of all.
Hale's signature
On a Tuesday in the third cycle, Hale signs a release line he is told is routine. It is not. The signature authorizes the relocation of Bay Three's overflow into the south spur ventilation grid. Every fog bank Kai will later walk through is downstream of that pen stroke.

"The first time it slipped the boundary, no one noticed. The chamber kept its own stillness — the kind that makes you hear the blood in your ears if you stand too long without speaking. Copper thrummed like a bowl tapped and left to remember the strike."

Node Zero ends with a seam on the south spur. Porchlight opens decades later, inside a perimeter no one crosses without a dog. These are the log entries that connect them.
Year 1 — The Vent
Bay Three's overflow is rerouted into the south spur ventilation grid under Hale's signature. The first fog bank is reported within a season. It does not disperse. The Glyph Church calls it a blessing of continuity; the rail workers call it the breath.
Year 7 — The Perimeter
After the third town inside the breath goes quiet, Lockvale chalks a hard line at the south spur and stops sending carts past it. The line is later poured in concrete, then iron, then dog. The word Outlands enters the ledgers because no other word survives the page.
Year 19 — The Kennel Holds
Wren's field-steady bloodline is the only thing that walks the perimeter and comes back coherent. The Church classifies the dogs as instruments. Brute is logged as a pup the year the second annex burns. He does not age the way the others do.
Year 34 — Porchlight Begins
Kai is old enough to be sent out. Brute is older than any kennel record admits. Wren is older than that. The porch is lit because someone has to be coming back.
The Remnants — the patients whose coherence index slipped past 0.74 — are not resolved here. Their thread picks up in the sequel to Porchlight.
